Covid aside, we have somehow managed to take a single day of fun and gift exchanges, and precede it with a six week stress-fest that means no-one is really in the mood when the day arrives.

For me, if we are going to start six weeks - and its edging into eight now - weeks before, then Christmas should last for a week.

If we are going to have Christmas for one day, then we should start nothing at all until seven days before, not a moment earlier.

But six (eight!) weeks of stress and build-up for one day is simply ridiculous.

Anne, I can't not look or listen when having the radio or television on. I would be constantly switching them on and off. It's constant!!

Agreed Andy. Actually, most of us who are over a certain age will remember when Christmas Shopping, decorating, cooking etc started a few weeks before and Christmas Day and Boxing Day were the only holiday days. There was no New Year bank holiday, so no reason to extend the holiday season up to 2 January. And Christmas was much more fun.

Way back when I still lived in the States, Christmas didn't start until the day after Thanksgiving. I suspect that hasn't changed too much as Thanksgiving is as big, or bigger as a family holiday.

In the C of E the last Sunday before Advent was traditionally known as "Stir-Up Sunday". This comes from the Collect (prayer for the day):

""Stir up, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people that they may bring forth the fruit of good works..."

It was taken as a reminder that it was time to make the Xmas puddings and Xmas cakes. This was five Sundays before Xmas.

I had forgotten that Christmas cake and pudding had to be made in advance. We really don't like either!

Early Christmas present for me, after nearly three months of waiting and two cancellations (By them) I'll finally have my Flu jab this afternoon (Asthmatic) not my usual Surgery a bit farther away but know where it is.

As for family gathering still no plans as yet but do know so many can't/ won't be able to meet up.

being on your own might mean having the tv radio for company, i know what i would rather be doing thank you. Don;t recall the last time we spent watching tv when visiting brothers and their families. Too busy enjoying a natter, catching up with news, perhaps going for a drink at the local after Christmas day. I like celebrating my birthday with family, it makes it a bit more special

it was always stressful for the ladies AH, all that preparation, rarely did the fellas in our household help. Mum was the main cook, and though she wasn;t a great one always did us a nice dinner CD. shopping for foods, the order at the butchers for the turkey, ham and whatnot. She took most of the responsibility that it went well. When you are a kid it all seems so magical. Never thinking how exhausted she must have been. She was a great mum and i miss her

Not really a big Christmas fan but it is what you make of it.

This year being as 'normal' as possible tree up lights on around the house (only inside though).

And this year an early present of a new grand daughter this morning. :-)
