I also know it's a minor problem alongside the emotional one but we can't be the only house full of food, drink and presents for people who now can't come. It's wicked, many will have scrimped, saved or gone into debt to end up in the same situation.
To "monitor the situation " and "fools rush in where angels fear to tread " are aphorisms that I have tried to live up to throughout my professional life. If it works you are a hero, if it doesn't then you are a villain and in this case it hasn't worked when formulating a change of policy to the new threat or a Covid variant.

Or accept that governments can get it wrong and seeing sense at the last minute showed a desire to do what was right rather than what was popular. I was always going to be on my own but that was because I couldn't face Christmas pretending to have fun, I think 60 years of that is long enough. It's not like years gone by, we have phones, we have electronic face to face, it's not like we have to rely on letters. It's different this year, it may not be back to normal completely by next but instead of getting angry remember you were going to visit them so you are still alive and so are they. you are winning even though it doesn't feel like it.
