D I Box

Ive just bought a Direct Injection Box (D. I. 100) for a quid at a car boot sale. I know its for plugging instruments or mics into but what does it do exactly. Its only a bargain if you've got a use for it. Thanx in advance.

I also bought a shin ei companion fuzz pedal and a shure microphone for �2 each and the woman threw in the di box for an extra quid. I couldnt say no after she gave me the other two items at that price. Anyway my sons rock band will probably use them. Oh and you are a bit rude Kerplunk. But i thank you in any event.

A DI box serves two purposes normally. The first ia to split the signal so that you can send it to both your amp and the main mixing desk of your PA or Recording system. The second is to match the impedance. Most guitars etx have a high impedance unbalance output, where as most mixing desks have a low impedance balanced input. DI boxes come in to basic types: Passive, which use transformers, and Active which use (essentially) an amplifier. Active ones require a power source: either a battery or they can use the phantom power output from the mixing desk (the same one as used by condenser mikes)
