Light Bulb Changers
16 Answers
In my drop ceilings, I have lightbulbs (R80 screw in).
I can no longer do ladders, so the last time one blew I stuck some duck tape upside down on a reaching stick, and managed to turn it enough to remove and replace it.
Are the commercially available lightbulb changing tools any use?

You carry on twisting.
a) you use a twisting motion to screw in the light bulb, and the duct tape sort of scrunches up on the bulb's surface.
b) then carry on twisting, even though the bulb is now solid, and the tape carries on screwing itself into a smaller and smaller lump, which you can then use the reacher pole to gently twist off.
Never had any problems that end, Barry. The only time the system failed was when the bulb came away from its mount, so I was left with bulb, plus brass mount still inside the cavity.

They are readily available and work well on a bayonet or screw type bulb that is fitted into a ceiling rose, pretty useless if your light fitting is suspended, you have nothing to push against .. I used to look after a number of large sheltered schemes. I did have a bulb changer, but I am afraid it didn't suit all the bulbs that were fitted .. so more often than not, it was out with the long ladder.
Most bulbs have a protective cover in a commercial environment, very few situations where you have a naked bulb suspended.
