Are there any cards around which still give any sort of cashback? My Nationwide has recently given up, as has my Halifax, apart from a two-month special over Christmas.
Pixie, choose a credit card that gives you rewards for using it. Use it to pay for everything and the rewards mount up.
I've already mentioned the extra protection using a credit card gives you. A real scenario - you save up for a long time and finally order that new, expensive 3 piece suite and pay for it in cash. Two days before delivery the company goes bust - you have very likely lost most or all of your money. Had you paid by credit card you would get all your money back. Or the computer you bought becomes faulty within weeks of buying it. The seller is refusing to refund you - but the credit card company is equally liable so claim off them. Easier than taking the seller to court.
Just don't be tempted to use it to buy things you can't afford and would not buy if you had to save.
Thanks barry - the trouble with Amex is that, unless things have changed, lots of traders won't accept it due to the larger commission they charge.

Don't have any credit or a credit card.
Have one debit card which I use all the time, haven't handled cash for ages.
Happy bunny ;o)
Don't use a credit card anymore. Hadn't used it for years except for larger items and the insurance aspect, but had a letter from bank when I reached a certain age saying that I couldn't use it for insurance purposes any more. Kept it for emergency use just in case I lost my debit card, but then had another letter saying it had been cancelled because I hadn't used it for years.
We use ours for holidays and furniture. Just for the protection though.
barry - thanks, I'll look into that.
We use our credit cards all the time because we get about £100 p.a.in John Lewis/Waitrose vouchers for doing so. We have always paid off the balance in full every month.
That's basically what I used mine for ummmm, but apparently when you reach 70 Capital 1 don't give protection anymore!
I only use my credit card for big purchases which I then pay off half straight away and the rest when I get paid.
