Whilst perhaps there is a degree of being compensated for having to do the job she was supposed to be doing anyway, to me the incident does raise an interesting question.

The claimant's point was that she had to search both males & females, whereas the male warders only ever searched males. So, yes, there was some degree of discimination.

But, what would the outcry have been if the male warders had searched the females?

Apparent;ly years ago the FEMALE prison guards complained that not being able to search male prisoners, therefore not have the variety of prisons to go and work in, made their promotion prospects less than males. Therefore the law was passed that women can search men, tho there would be no need for men to search women. This guard complained that there were 2 queues and her queue was twice as long as the male guards as the prisonners "got off" on her searching them. It has now been passed that women guards "can" search male prisoners but will not be made to.
