Insects can tolerate extremely low temperatures and can go into a sort of suspended animation, similar to when mammals hibernate, where the organs slow down and minimum energy in consumed to stay alive.
Some of the more 'intelligent' insects such as bees show a distinct resting period usually in the sun. But as they can't shut their eyes, it is not easy to determine whether they are resting or just warming up.
