I am not disputing for a moment that what you say may be true - it's perfectly possible that it is, but it bears qualification that there is little concrete evidence that the situation you describe was actually the cause and effect that has been offered.

I have just played it, and all I got was a version of the song without the orchestral accompaniment - just piano bass and drums.
That sounds to me like an unused studio outake, and I see nothing wrong with it all, so quite why anyone would think a) that it was sub-standard, and b) that it was sub-standard because Lennon 'sabotaged' it - is a mystery to me.

Flawed genius as many are. I remember well in the 60s, where it all began, when he took a Martha Reeves b side(Heatwave 1963) and produced a classic. It was an Ike and Tina Turner track but Ike never even got in the studio. He as furious as it made him redundant and gave the voice that Spector wanted a singularity. An entire "story" of it's own developed from there of course. Whilst keeping one songster in captivity he released another. Spector produced this in 1966 for the River Deep Album. Ike didn't want it on the album but the Record company did.
Umm- Spector met Ms Clarkson at the House Of Blues nightclub and she returned with him to his mansion.
Within a short time, Spector's chauffeur heard a gun shot and allegedly Spector said he had shot her.
In court Spector claimed she was 'kissing his gun' when it discharged.
Evidence showed bruising of the victim's tongue indicating that the gun was forced into her mouth.
After the first trial returned a 10 to 2 verdict, a retrial found Spector guilty of Second Degree Murder, the equivalent of Manslaughter here.
Spector was sentenced to eighteen years to life.

He was also known for a pathological dislike of people leaving his presence before he wished them to leave, which often resulted in more gunplay.
