Yes they are filmed at Christmas
I am pretty sure they are live

They are recorded, but usually shown in the week between Xmas and New Year, so a week or so to get them edited. My favourite series of all time was Prof Eric Laithwaite doing 'The Engineer in Wonderland'. Loads of hands on experiments for the kids and brilliant entertainment!
