Nationalism has a habit of escalating to extreme nationalism, just as religious belief has a habit of becoming fundamentalised.

It is a extreme version of a core belief. Seems every society has people who gravitate to the fringes of acceptability.

They encourage each other, seizing on minor (and not so minor) victories.

Foreign powers wanting to destabilise another country can sow seeds of discontent with anonymous posts and well designed memes. The Russians are behind a lot of the far right extremism in the US.
