Barsel, going off what you have said, I don't think it would be worth your while cutting down on water usage. The savings hardly justify the hardship, as you can see from my figures, the usage is negligible, my bill comprises 95% for standing charge and rainwater. Changed to water meter 4 years ago, saved on average about £120, on what use to be a yearly bill of £445. If there's four people in the house It may not pay to have a meter. When I had it first put in, I was told that if I wasn't happy with the savings I could go back to the norm, after twelve months no going back, so if that is still the case you could just try it.

cashier My bill is for £130.05 which is for the water I've used in the past 6 months.
Having spoken to my neighbours and finding out they don't take a shower everyday or flush the toilet as often, only wash the dishes once a day and only use the washing machine once or twice a week, I can see now what I would need to do if I wanted to bring my bill down.

teacake @16.30 if that is for me, I am on a meter, sorry, I hadn't made that clear in my previous posts.
That's about £22 per month Barsel, which isn't bad really. Also, as you say there are ways of getting it down a bit.
We pay around £55 a month now we are on a meter. Before that we were paying well over double that.
Question Author
cashier, no I suppose it isn't too bad, but I was a bit perplexed as to why others are paying £4-£5 a month less than me. I think one of the main ways I could save would be to not use my washing machine so often.
It would be handy to have a chart that shows how much water you use for different things.
Might give the water company a call to see if they have such a thing.

theshedman that seems a lot. How many in your household?

The savings hardly justify the hardship, as you can see from my figures, the usage is negligible, my bill comprises 95% for standing charge and rainwater. On Severn Trent big difference scheme, only pay 10% of the bill. Even people in two income families can apply most people get around 10-25% discount. Apparently other companies offer similar schemes they just don't publicize them
£37 a month, for 2 of us in the house, and we are on a meter.
Question Author
bluemoon1 I've given you BA because you have made me look more closely at my bill and you are right.
The actual fresh water usage charge is £34.73, whereas £95.32 is for the other things like standing charges and rainwater removal.
What a rip off!
Question Author
Rainwater removal is £103.46 a year!
Barsel, we have 3 in the house these days. South West Water has always been expensive.
Our pavement drains have been blocked (probably by tree roots) for at least 20 years. Suppose I should report it if we are paying for the service!
You could try ringing your water company and ask them if they have any free water saving devices such as something to put in your cistern so you would used less water each time you flush. Try collecting the cold water run off, when you are waiting for the hot water to come through (it's a lot in summer), and use for plants or for flushing.
Slight diversion but....has anyone read about dishy Rishi's 'idea' to replace council tax and stamp duty with a property levy based on the current market value of your property?......around 0.48% payable per year!!
We do that cashier. We are paying less than half of what we used to pay so that is good.
Is there just you Barsel?
Question Author
Yes just me cashier. I like the idea of saving the water that comes out cold before the hot kicks in and using it for flushing. Don't need water for the garden as everything is artificial, even the grass.
I haven't got a clue but I doubt a meter would save us much over the year.
