Optical illusion, Tilly. If you cover the bright horizontal strip the two cushions can be seen to be the same colour/shade.

Still quite different for me.
Try using the spine of a book, or something similar, instead of using your finger.

Quite clever.
It works if you have fat fingers that can block out a sizeable portion of the area between the two sections.
