Unfortunately they're the outcome of Covid running wild, on and off, over the last year: the more the virus spreads, the more it's likely to mutate. We'll just have to hope that if the vaccines aren't enough to deal with them at present, they can be adapted to do so.
The last of the 50's and up and clinically vulnerable aren't scheduled to get second injections until august according to the calculator and that is still calculating on 70ish% uptake when in fact so far its much higher. Given that the priority seems to be getting kids back in school, I don't see much relaxation happening.
