does this mean one has to change the card in amazon, sainsburys, or any business that holds my card details. hope this makes sense.

lots of advice (conflicting) here
I am with santander and my card runs out end of Feb. They sent me the new one about a month ago. It has a different long and short number. I continued to use the old one till yesterday, when i used the new one in a shop to buy something.
I changed my online accounts (sains, tesco, amazon) to the new one today.
No "activation" needed except to use it

I assume that when you bought something in a shop with the new one you used your PIN. That in itself is a form of activation.
