There was a programme on BBC4 this week called All Aboard! New Zealand by Rail, Sea and Land. It is two and a half hours long and the blurb states -

"All Aboard! New Zealand by Rail, Sea and Land takes an epic overland train, boat and car journey through New Zealand’s breathtaking landscapes. The voyage begins in Auckland, but the city soon gives way to rolling pastures, volcanic extremes, tranquil waterways, the snowcapped grandeur of the Southern Alps and the beauty of Fiordland."

I have recorded it but it is available on catchup for the next 27 days. If you can't go on holiday then this maybe the closest you will get and may even give you some ideas for your next trip. Bring on the bad weather. I won't care as I'll be settled down with a brew and some chocolate and enjoying my virtual trip.

I did this for real in 2002. Train, boat+ train from Aukland to Invercargill. And then cycled all the way back.
Back to Aukland not to the uk.
It sounds interesting but the programme makers seem to have goofed with the title.

Travelling "by air, sea and land" makes sense but "by rail, sea and land" seems to ignore the fact that rail travel is by land anyway!
Not picky much Chris.

Sounds lovely.
Am i thick? how have they goofed? air(plane)sea(boat) land(train) this is how i got around NZ.
Piggy, read the start of the second paragraph in the OP
and the countryside is truly beautiful, BD, some stunning scenery such as Milford and Doubtful Sounds, the drive from Nelson to Christchurch, up from Christchurch to Mt Cook (crap hotel), and then there's plenty on the N.Island such as Cape Kidnappers.... have a gander at this.

and look at their Kauri Cliffs site too!

Or the lodge that sends your bank manager into apoplexy... they change the soap twice a day! Wonderful beds and stunning food - my ex and I stayed there and the first night we were the only guests so we dined in the library where Phil and Liz had had their dinner!
