I have been watching an episode of Columbo. It’s the one starring Gene Barry. I think it was the first one, made . It’s hard to believe it’s over 50 years ago.. I like Columbo, and I have seen them all

The writers suggested Lee J. Cobb and Bing Crosby for the role of Columbo, but Cobb was unavailable and Crosby turned it down because he felt it would take too much time away from the golf links

Lee J Cobb was brilliant in Twelve angry men but I can't see him as Columbo, he's too intense. I would have expected Bing Crosby to break out in a song every five minutes.

The plot is a broad parody or spoof of the traditional country-house whodunit, familiar to mystery fiction fans of classics such as Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None. The cast is an ensemble of British and American actors playing send-ups of well-known fictional sleuths, including Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple, Charlie Chan, Nick and Nora Charles, and Sam Spade. It also features a rare acting performance by author Truman Capote.

Given that 12 Angry men has been mentioned .

The first time I saw this film , i happened upon it by chance .
I was Chanel surfing and thought i would watch a few minutes to see what it was all about .

Well, it drew me in and would not let go .
A few minutes became a few more minutes and a few more minutes became a few more minutes and ....

I love the final shot , with the close up of Henry Fonda standing at the entrance to the building and the camera slowly panning out to show more and more of the building and then the immediate surroundings and then showing a wider and wider view ,panning out with a shot of the city ; reminding the viewer that while they and the cast has been shut up.in the jury room without outside distraction , deliberating on the future if the accused ; the business and life in the city has been continuing in the meantime .

Any other tv show with the same format as Columbo ie the viewer sees the crime committed and by whom then our hero brilliantly solves the case.
Yes there is 'Banacek' starring George Peppard as Insurance Investigator Thomas Banacek. It only ran for two series 1972-1974

who would have thought that Bing Crosby was the original choice for the part of Columbo?

They are all highly watchable IMV but I particularly like "A Friend in Need" where the police commissioner murders his wife.

And Perter Falk's real wife Shera Danese appears in several episodes. Never the killer but once a conspirator.

'Just One More Thing'.....if you're a fan of Peter Falk and not just Columbo may I strongly recommend this book. It's hugely entertaining, fuuny and informative. I bought a copy a few years ago and have re-read since.
