No. The idea is that you keep an eye on the date and apply to your local council a few weeks before in order for the new badge to be dispatched in a timely manner.

The renewal date is on the badge.
I went on line and filled in a form, paid the fee and all ok.

Yes mine expires April 2nd, I got reminder in January, I renewed immediately and got it back within 3 weeks. I'm in Kent, probably differs a lot where you live

It depends upon which council area you're in.

Kent County Council stopped issuing reminders but then changed their minds:

Norfolk County Council state: "Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure you apply for your new badge when your current one nears expiry. We do not send reminder letters"
