I think you need to take Arrod's advice ie, see a solicitor. This is a complicated situation; the insurance company took policy money from you and is now refusing a third-party claim which, I think, is not allowed. We need NewJudge to comment on here.

My thought is that surely they shouldn't have accepted my insurance application if the details didn't correspond to what's required for them to provide cover.
Did you tell them that you owned the car?

You've got two separate issues here:

Firstly, you're in dispute with the insurer as to whether they should have paid out or not.

Secondly, you're in dispute with the claimant about the value of the claim.

To deal with the second issue, you're going to need the services of a solicitor. However you can try tackling the first one yourself by complaining to the Financial Ombudsman. It won't cost you a penny, so it's got to be worth a try:

Thank you for your advice, I'll have to start researching law firms that deal with this stuff. Gonna cost n arm n leg, I can feel it.
