One thing I didn't do; when my 12 year old son was in a coma I didn't drink or smoke weed. One poor black lad was there at the hospital with his wife and their baby who was dying of meningitis, and the poor black lad I saw swigging from a can outside the hospital door; I really felt for him, but I also felt superior because I wasn't doing that. When the poor child died, a black lady preacher came and held a noisy service over the bed. I'm not religious, but I could never judge someone who has a swig when in sorrow or who takes comfort from a believer. I was lucky; our son survived and theirs didn't. I didn't deserve it and neither did they.

I probably have a sip at least every evening. I tend to pour a largeish G&T and it last 3 days. I rarely drink wine, don't know what the fuss is all about. Not changed during lockdown (but then I've been working full time). I probably drink what I do drink to calm my nerves although I genuinely like the taste of gin and tonic (and rum and coke). I've honestly never been drunk in the real sense of the word. I find the effect of alcohol makes me dozy at first, any more and I feel unpleasantly woozy and panic about losing control.
Thanks Atheist, appreciate you sharing your experiences. This post isnt about me, but its interesting you mention the link between drinking and believing. When my drinking spiralled out of control, my spiritual health was severely disrupted too. Many millions, people of all faiths and of none, have come to find a Higher Power through AA, and a permanent solution to not drinking. I couldnt have stopped in my own strength, God knows I tried to often enough. It required a lot of humbling for someone who thought I was superior to most people, and looking down on them through the gutter. Interestingly, the experience of getting sober broadened my outlook, and although am still a Christian, have much more respect for people who I dont share a faith with. If it wasnt for others who demonstrated complete unselfishness, I would be long dead. Drink, or I should say, alcoholism, is a great leveller. It affects all walks of life; rich, poor, religious, irreligious, men, women, young, old, all races, all occupations, all nationalities...
Thanks for all the very interesting answers.
Me, I have a drink probably three or four evenings a week, usually at around 5pm, rarely with and never after our evening meal.
I really enjoy wine but find the danger is if I open a bottle then the whole bottle is consumed in one sitting.
I also really like G&T but as I like it chilled I’ve found it to be a summer drink as it makes me too cold in winter.
Two cocktails I enjoy are a margarita, and a dark and stormy.
I think I drink out of habit partly..it’s 5pm so time for a drink..and also because I like the feeling one or two drinks give. And I like the taste. I think I drank more than usual during the first lockdown but now it’s much as it was before.
Occasionally during lockdown we’ve treated ourselves to a lunchtime drink as we feel if we’d gone out for lunch we’d probably have shared a bottle of wine.
