On The Chase they often refer to being in quiz leagues - how do you join them - do you have to be in a team or are they individuals against one another and are they against the clock or like all the quizzes I've even know where you get a set time for each question?

The actual format can vary between leagues, with some competitions solely directing questions to teams as a whole (so that conferring is always allowed) but with many others asking questions to team members in turn (with no conferring ever allowed) or adopting a mix of the two formats across different rounds.

There are links to the websites of over 70 quiz leagues here (with most being in the UK but some being overseas). Some of those sites will have information about the rule structures within those leagues:

>>> Paul Sinha has also made occasional references about having seen a contestant before
There's nothing in the general eligibility requirements prohibiting someone who's been on the show before from returning to it at a later date:

(One can't see the full registration form there without commencing the actual registration process. There are usually all sorts of questions about criminal convictions, etc in such forms. There might well also be a question asking if a candidate has been on the show before but answering 'Yes' wouldn't necessarily rule them out from reappearing on it).

I was a member of a team in a county inter-pub quiz league.
We had home and away games. The format, which will probably vary according to league, was several rounds of general knowledge questions to be answered by the team as a whole, an individual round where each member in turn answered with no help and one themed round of which you had no advance knowledge. The home team had to appoint a monitor to sit at each team's table to ensure no rule-breaking, though this was pre-mobile phone era. All followed by a pie and peas supper usually.
Often I was the only female. But it was great fun and I'd love to get involved again if there was a league available to me.
I still have my trophies btw. :0)

The biggest league that I think Chasers take part in is probably the Quiz League of London. There's also a few Eggheads there.

The real fun comes when you notice that the top two teams in that league currently are the "Nomads" and the "Broken Hearts", featuring no Eggheads or Chasers at all (they can be found mostly in Gray Monks and Pericardium), and indeed perhaps scarily the Chasers and Eggheads aren't the top players in this competition! There's also plenty of former Uni Challenge and Only Connect Alumni in the league.
There's also plenty of links from that site to other quiz organisations around the country; finally, QLL has almost all of its previous quiz questions available for free (personal) use:

I should also mention that there's an open buzzer quiz event scheduled for September 11th this year, for those who are interested enough:

And, finally, there was an online open buzzer quiz event earlier this year that I was lucky enough to participate in -- the eventual winners were Pericardium, featuring the Governess herself, but they did end up losing one game in the event, to the team I was on.
