For example: On the label of the wine bottle it states it has ‘hints of’ strawberry, plum, and spice. Does it mean the flavor of the actual grape used achieves the taste in the wine or is it because of some additive to fortify the quality of the wine?

Regarding wine, a hint means a trace of.
I could be wrong but I think its the type of grape. All grapes give a slightly different flavour
Also apart from grape variety, depends on climatic conditions for a particular season / year. Wine reviews can be a bit pretentious aswell.
Not absolutely sure but I think that 'note' should read nose.
well sniffed out danny

They are what experts tell you they can taste, for example a big shiraz will have plums mentioned somewhere in the tasting notes, an Aussie chardonnay night mention peaches or mango, a French one probably won't because the grapes are grown in different soil, in a different climate. When you start out you will probably just taste grapes and oak, but eventually you will be able to notice flavours that remind you of other things.
no ---- natural taste without additives
