It should be used when making batter, to improve it, as opposed to just using flour. I have not been able to buy Birds Golden Raising Powder for a long time, so production may well have ceased; I should have contacted Birds (or the company that owns the brand name) before now, to find out. If production has ceased, I wish it had not and I hope it restarts.

Bird's Golden Raising Powder was a raising agent - like Baking Powder - used in cakes, scones and the like. I remember my Mum ALWAYS used it in her baking and had great results. I have not been able to find it for years despite arduous searches. It was, as the name suggests, golden in colour. I am not sure of the ingredients but perhaps it was withdrawn because of a change in what was permitted in foodstuffs - as happens so often. One thing I do remember is a slight 'tang' to the scones, which I always attributed to the Raising Powder.
