Let me begin by stating that I am as deeply saddened by the tragedy of this young woman's death, and would extend sincere sympathy to her family and friends.

But I would wish to raise a point about the reaction to this one individual murder.

Since no murder can reasonably be judged to be any more or any less tragic than any other, I am curious about the national focus, and attendent internet outrage about this one particular case, and why the nation has suddenly risen up in horror about this one tragic death, when similar tragic deaths occur every day, and pass virtually without comment.

Of course papers like the Mail do as they always do - the size of the pictures of the poor woman are directly proportional to her perceived physical attraction when she was alive.

The unspoken message as always, is that somehow, the death of attractive people is somehow more tragic, which is a dreadful way to treat anyone who has died, but it's what they do.

My point though, is, does anyone have any theories as to why some cases attract sudden mass attnetion - the Madelaine McCann case being another prime example - and others seem to pass by with almost no reaction at all.

Any thoughts?

Very distressing scenes yesterday. I doubt her family found the whole episode comforting at all .
I don't remember this much reaction when a heavily pregnant women was murdered two years ago and the baby died soon after. Domestic violence is sadly an every day occurrence.
Perhaps it would be too much to ask for Priti Patel,Sadiq Khan and Cressida *** resignation letters to be in the post by tonight? No,i didnt think so...
...and err..when did peoples surnames get deleted from AB?@...?
I find it ironic that all those critisising the police trying to disperse these women because of covid are all too ready to support the police in this situation when other groups get together for any other reason.
The Police have not had a good pandemic.
There have been instances when they don’t themselves know the rules and wrongfully detain and fine innocent people.
There have been instances where the police have purposely assumed powers that aren’t there.
There has been little common sense or leadership shown.
For the past year numerous cases have arisen of insensitive policing, which break the bond of policing by consensus.
Last Sunday, a protest by nurses about their measly pay increase saw their leader arrested and given a £10,000 fine. Utterly stupid.
Arresting women at a vigil concerning a woman murdered by a policeman, is just beyond the pale. Some discretion should be shown.
I fear the police have badly let themselves down this past year and are losing the support of the public.
personally i think it's because every single woman can relate to walking home and feeling nervous/intimidated/scared/being flashed at/taking a different way/crossing over so they dont have to pass certain people
dave i think the problem is that the police seem to have acted differently this time. When the colston statue was toppled, policce werent there stopping people from gathering, BLM protests were llowed to go on and so on

roy - // Simple really, when I hear one drug dealer has killed a rival I don't think 'tragic' //

Your position appears to be that you don;t mourn the violent death of one criminal at the hands of another - but the dead person still has innocent family, and for them, the death is a tragedy.

Sunk - // Arresting women at a vigil concerning a woman murdered by a policeman, is just beyond the pale. //

Arresting women at a vigil who are breaking the law is the police's job.

The police don;t arrest people for the fun if it, they arrest them because they are committing an arrestable offence - the circumstances are not relavent.
dead but not a woman but a drug dealer

I'm with you on this one Andy.

Andy, I don't believe it has anything to do with perceived attractiveness. I honestly wouldn't say FG was attractive enough to cause an uproar. I think these two people are basically being used as "spearheads" for general issues. One for racist violence and one for violence against women.
In neither case, do I think it's about the actual individual victim, but more that society is fed up with certain behaviours.
I'm not actually even sure whether Floyd George died due to racism. Chauvin already had many complaints about him, and I'm not sure what colour his other victims were. Maybe he was a dangerous bully, rather than a racist dangerous bully?
Madeleine McCann.... everyone can relate to a small child going missing.
So, I think- it's more about the general principles, than a particular individual.
I think that sometimes there is a growing feeling of injustice over a particular situation that doesn't find expression amongst the general population until something particularly shocking or poignant occurs which "lights the blue touch paper". That event may not even be any worse than others which went before but it just tips the balance.

Maybe the Hungarian uprising and the young man setting himself on fire that triggered the "Arab Spring" were such moments in history.

I do take your point about the individual incidents becoming a representation for the issues highlighted as a whole, but I stand by my point that the more physically attractive the (usually female) victim is, the larger the tabloid image that accompanies the headline.
