I use caustic soda periodically on my sink & basin outlets.
Any of the commercial block busters work well
If you have the modern screw-fix plumbing and it's accessible, you may be able to unscrew the u-bend and clean it out, beware, they can be heave-making!
Ever unscrewed the u bend and tipped the water in the bend down the sink??? Ha ha. Not.
I use Duzzit Drainaway. Works a treat...and cheap too. You can get it on Amazon, or cheap and cheerful pound type shops have it. No physical effort involved.

Too late now I know, but to help prevent a sink blockage, each time you empty it push the water down the plug hole with the flat of your palm to push the water and gunk, rather than letting it drain.

will try bleach as i did try plunger and it hasn't worked. Have also ordered some sink buster just in case.
Question Author
thanks for link pasta, will bear that in mind for future reference.
Bleach doesn't do anything to actually move the blockage...and I'm not sure it breaks it up either. Try a kettle or 2 of boiling water...it might dissolve the gunk a bit.
Caustic soda is good, but a) needs care using and b) seems difficult to get hold of these days (probably nanny state stuff).
Question Author
bleach didn't work and if i run the very hot water tap it just fills up the basin. Have bought online shop some sink buster as it worked on the bathroom shower base.
Soda crystals work well too.
Question Author
thanks for all the advice - tilly i have heard that too
Does the loo flush ok? If not, might be a blockage outside.
Question Author
loo is fine as is the shower and kitchen sink..
i had the most horrendous time with the kitchen sink, it took six visits from council plumbers to finally tell me it was the stack and that needed to be cleaned, the mess was awful, black gunk came up the sink, they finally got it under control but what a nightmare.
