I must admit, they give me the creeps a bit too, I just keep a respectful distancs and let them do their thing.
They are actually good things to have around in the garden, as they eat lots of pests. I have a big one in my green house that traps crane flies and even wasps, it wraps them up in silk and stores them for later.
Skylights right they are harmless but not to flies!

Like everyone says, they wont do you any harm, just live and let live. If the webs get in the way, gently remove them into a large glass and put them on the earth, they will scuttle away and are more scared of you than you are of them ! If they are on the floor indoors, get a large tumbler, put it over the spider and slide a piece of card underneath gently (dont want to break their little legs) and you can then open the door and put them on the grass. In fact open the door first ... Good luck ! And please dont kill them.
Spiders are great. They attract birds, etc to your garden, making interesting watching. We have an epidemic of vine weevils in our garden and you wouldn't want these. Every leaf that they like has been bitten and they have killed many shrubs when the larva eat plant roots. We have purchased some nematodes and used them in early August but we won't know for ages if they've had any effect. We have a large garden and really despair of getting rid of them.
