I love this type of puzzle. Unfortunately, I was enjoying it so much I forgot to put dinner in the oven! I thought the clash might give me trouble, as they often do, but I found this one without too much trouble. Nice implementation of the theme, clues pitched perfectly for the task, and no prolonged grid staring - terrific, thanks.

Based on logic the quotation soon followed. Then I got stuck. I knew where the clash was located but had loads more clashes, because for ages I thought that each clue in the figure-of-eight pair was confined to its own half. It would have helped if I'd looked at the diagram in the preamble, wouldn't it? Duh.
Well, got there in the end after a break for dinner and a nice bottle of Verdicchio di Jesi. Clever puzzle, but I can't stand the thematic duo!

Excellent puzzle - did all the donkey work whilst stone-cold sober, all numbered clues and most of the 8 letters solved.
But just couldn't fit it all together - so gave up and got (ahem) very 'relaxed' watching the rugby with a zoom group.
Came back to the puzzle for a last intoxicated look - and it all dropped out in ten minutes.
Very satisfying and a good challenge - thanks Phi ...
