I thought they sounded lovely, but having had a couple I now think they are awful. Emptying them involves clouds of smoke-like dust going everywhere. The filters get clogged up and need to be tapped and shaken and again the 'smoke' goes everywhere. A cleaner with a bag that acts as container and filter now seems an attractive prospect. Any advice from clever ABers who have tried all sorts?

I agree with you, Atheist. We have a Vax bagless machine which is lovely to use but needs emptying after every use. On the adverts , you just open them up and all the debris just drops out into the bin. That is not so! You have to literally scrape it out into the bin and, consequently become enveloped in clouds of dust! Horrible.

However, the convenience and ease of use or the the machine overrides the mushroom cloud of dust. I just try to stand back or get Mr T to do it. :-)
Have both corded and cordless Dysons and don't have any problems...emptied outside, the filters don't get blocked but get a wash every so often. Certainly better than paying a fortune for replacement bags.

Hmmmmm. Interesting, so far. My baglesses weren't Dysons. Maybe posh ones are better?
Yes, but it's not all sweetness and light...the cordless one seems to need a new rechargeable battery pack (not bad going, it is 5 years old) and it costs £65 from Dyson...but is out-of-stock!
I find there is still a cloud of dust when I empty my Dysons and the filters need frequent rinsing but I have got very dusty clay soil and a dog who loves to tread mud in. I minimise the cloud by putting the cannister in a bin bag before emptying it. On balance I stick with my Dyson because the performance is so good.
Swings & roundabouts. Bagless with filters, if you have the time/inclination to clean your vac regularly otherwise bag is the best option. IMV

dave is swinging me towards my current opinion. Replace bag; no dust; maybe new bags a bit more expensive? But bagless vacs also more expensive.
I'm very grateful for AB opinions. Looking forward to more points of view.
We've got a bosch bagless, brilliant at it's job but like others have said
you need to wear a mask to empty it.
I have a bagless upright cordless vacuum cleaner, no problem emptying it, just hold it over the bin and press the button to remove the dirt, give it a little shake to get any stubborn dirt out.
I have dyson no problems at all
I have a Shark, it is excellent. Best one I ever had.

To all those with bagless; don't you find the dust a mess? I have always had problems with blocked filters, and a throw-away bag/filter sounds like a good idea. Maybe my baglesses were too cheap and cheerful?
My (original) Dyson is a nightmare to empty - dust goes everywhere & clogs up inside the cylinder so you have to wipe it out - def a mask job so I don't use it now.

The Beldray Airgility (which I bought following a discussion on here) is easy & clean to empty - just hold over the bin & click the flap open. You still have to remove & clean the filter (washable not paper) occasionally which is a bit more messy.
