Why Do Property Gurus Rave About High Ceilings?

Anything above about 8ft is space you can't use but have to heat. Also more difficult to reach when doing any decorating. Why were house built like that in first place - I bet new-builds aren't.

Normal here but in Hong Kong we had an apartment with 15ft ceilings - supposedly nice and cool in feel. We had sunken spotlights installed and had them painted in a light mushroom colour which really was quite dramatic, especially as the view out was looking down on Aberdeen and the Floating Palace. We put in two full-on Ficus trees and rented a grand for a bit of drama and to fill the cavernous space (which with the dining room open plan was around 800 sq feet), the ex quite a dab hand at playing it!

Height can work - but I do prefer the cottage feel.

I must admit our cottage is spacious and airy even without high ceilings. I could never live in a modern house unless it was designed to our specs and somewhere special. But that's never going to happen!!
