Hi, can anyone give me any ideas for healthier snacks for the kids when they get home from school.
they are always so hungry, and dive straight into the cupboards!!

i've made my own flapjacks - the oats are good - but i worry about the sugar and syrup content.

i've made scones - no sugar.

can't seem to think of any thing else. we also have a bowl of fruit in the house and the kids do eat it it's just when they get in from school they never want 'just fruit'.

can anyone help??

Ryvita crackers with humous or low fat philly cheese, or carrot battons and apple slices with dips? Dead easy to make too
home made popcorn :-)
sugar free jelly too :-)
Little packs of raisins
Home made popcorn is a great idea, popcorn is really healthy (if you don't add butter, sugar or salt) and it's interactive.

You could get one of those duck pop-corn makers.

Lollies made with real fruit juice sold in cartons such as orange, cranberry or the fruit mixtures(you might have to add some water if you want them a bit more 'icy'). That way the kids think they are having a treat and its also healthy.
How about: peanut butter on wholemeal bread; nuts and raisins; good old beans on toast or a bowl of homemade soup.
home made yoghurt with fresh fruit either in chunks or purreed to make fruit flavour yoghurt . I done loads of these recently having bought a yoghurt maker from lakeland, you can also make yoghurt drinks/fruit smoothies. A smoothie maker is another good piece of kit cos you can make fruit smoothies/yoghurt drinks/milk shakes etc all with fresh additive free ingredients.
Other snacks - pieces of fruit/veg with homemade humous/guacamole/cheesy dips etc.

janetsflower - i do make my own cakes ect. but didn't think this was a healthier option. but as opposed to shop bought ones i suppose they are!! As long as they don't have too many too often! LOL

thanks for the ideas - it's just with all the media hype about what kids eat i was getting a bit paranoid that i was only feeding them junk, even though they have good balanced meals most of the time - no ready meals! - i was getting concerned.

thanks to you all xXx
all differnt types of nuts are healthy as they arerich in vitamin B and D - unsalted. Adding them along with raisins tastes lovely. A morning roll ct in half with some tomatoes sliced over and grilled is like a little home-made pizza and would fill them up in time for tea
Cameo. If they are eating "healthy" the rest of the time then why not give them a special treat when they get home from school. Homemade flapjacks or cakes - excelent as long as they don't over indulge. It' also a nice excuse for siiting around the table chatting and having a nice cup of tea or even a drink of juice.

I don't have a sweet tooth now but I could be tempted by home baking!

Sometimes "hunger" is a sign of dehyration but please disregard this if your kids have had enough to drink. I don't wish to sound like a "know it all" if you know what I mean.
