Howlin Wolf
Written by Willie Dixon, first released in 1961 by Howlin' Wolf
Which charts do you mean, US or UK?
I actually bought this record twice. I lent it to a mate after id scratched my initials on the label and never got it back until 1990 something when i found it on a flea market stall
thanks barry saves me looking it up
He hasn't asked about the charts, just who first recorded it
Sam Cooke also released it in 1963, still before the Stones
Wiki can be so useful :D
It's a fabulous version by The Stones, Jagger is all sleazy innuendo, Jones's slide is sublime, and Watt's solid beat anchors everything.

On a wall in Shugborough is a black and white picture of Jagger holding a rooster, taken by his friend Lord Lichfield.
didn't know about Sam Cooke but have just dug out Howlin' Wolf " London Sessions" CD, Part of "The Blues Collection" and its track one
not track 1 but track 10
if i remember rightly "Off the Hook" was the B side
"Who first recorded little red rooster in the charts" could be about the first version in the US charts or the first version in the UK charts (if they are not the same).
