Traditionally these worked and gave off O2 and H20

I think you mean O2 and H2? This only happens during the charge cycle and only a little ..... see above link for info on seald systems

If you use an automatic charger the charging voltage is kept away from the point gassing occurs so no hydrogen gas is produced.
