Because it seems they can usually get at least as much elsewhere. Eddie Maiyer from BBC Radio for example.
don't get me started on Gary Lineker :-)

But if the BBC didn't pay these wages then they would have talent like Andrew Marr and Gary Lineker.

or even "wouldn't have"
No idea how much surgeons in the private sector earn and I don't care but NHS surgeons get paid from public money.
I couldn't give a hoot how much these 'stars' earn as long as I'm not paying their wages - hopefully they pay their fair share of income tax.

The BBC has to pay the going rate - otherwise all the best would go to the commercial channels.
I think the tail is trying to wag the dog - did anyone miss Robert Peston when he left the BBC?

Not sure the talent would all leave. There is a certain cachet to working for the national broadcaster. Also, the other news broadcasters, ITV, Sky are less left-biased. Channel 4 News (from ITV) does tend to be more questioning of the government though.

but licence payers ARE paying their wages, at least in part.
I understand that BBC pay less than C4 and ITV in a lot of cases. If that's the going rate I doubt they would say no! Not sure it's fair to compare to other professions if it's standard pay for the industry.
