Why Does My Laptop

make a whooshing noise, it happens every so often, is it cooling down?

because it goes on for a time, like now. its been about 10 minutes so far.

There is a fan to cool the processor which only cuts in when needed. It's wise to open up the laptop and clean the fan every now and again.

i won't be opening up the laptop as i haven't a clue how. i won't touch it anyway as fear that i my damage it - so its cooling process, it sounds like a jet engine taking off....

Do you keep the vents clear? If you use your laptop on a cushion on your lap, for example, it will overheat.
Buy a tin of compressed air and use it to blow in to the vents and over the keyboard.

If you are running a lot of demanding processes at the same time your processor will struggle and overheat - have a look at the task manager and see what is going on when it makes that noise.

Don't be frightened of opening up your laptop - there are plenty of videos on YouTube to give you step by step instructions for your make and model. If you can expose the fan and blast it with air it will improve things enormously - you will also be able to see that it is still working properly.

I am thinking a clean soft brush and your hairdryer on cool could help in the meantime.
The fan should not be running for extended periods so do look at the task manager and check the other great advice on that first link.
