a debate from the US, but probably just as relevant here.

ms Nixon is probably correct in that there's no gain in prosecuting the vulnerable. but does that make the case for allowing shoplifting and accepting it as a social necessity?

I would never wish to deny Ms Nixon the right to voice her opinions simply on the basis that her eight-figure bank balance clearly sheids her from some of the realities which she is discussing.
But clearly her view is simplistic in the extreme.
People being too poor to feed their families is a sad fact of society, but the notion that you solve one societial ill by creating another is simply not a valid way to manage a civilised society.
If you adopt Ms Nixon's notion, where do you stop?
You cannot solve one problem by sanctioning another, the solution needs to be found, but clearly that is abdoslutelyu not it.
Ms Nixon has sadly fallen prey to the modern trend for thinking something fatuous, and committing it to the world via her keyboard, before taking the sensible step of running it past any one of her adult family and friends, who would have - to a man or woman - laughed until they passed out.

i remember also, a fellow would come into my local socal club with blank cassette tapes, the expensive ones back in the day when copying was all the craze, everybody bought some, not myself as i preffered vinyl, he also used to nick oddly ornate statues..ladies would buy, dust magnets to me..but there you go.
What you have to remember about the US at the moment is the very loud left has lost it’s mind. They come up with ever more outlandish ideas, ‘requests’ and demands. They look at everything in a very narrow field of vision and not at the consequences of their actions on the wider issue. The vast majority of business owners have a hard time making ends meet and to give shoplifters free range could very easily put them under.
The ‘poor’ who steal to feed their kids are in reality not the problem. And typical of the left they want to sledgehammer a twenty pointed 10 inch star into a five inch circle.
