How are they worked out, for instance, if you switch a programme on and decide after 5 mins you don't want to watch it and you switch it off, is it still counted?
Also, how do you find out how many people watched a particular programme? TIA

I seen in another link that the minutes spent watching a programme are decided by the minutes in the programme

If there are fifty minutes in the programme and you watched for five minutes, you are counted as 1/10 of a viewer.

This link gives answers to various questions and says about the calculation,

"Programme audiences are calculated by averaging the audience of all minutes covered by the programme transmission, from the start-time to the end-time of the programme. This calculation excludes any embedded commercial breaks and promotions."

That ties in with your being 1/10 of a viewer.

The FAQs also tell you how to find viewing figures.

Thanks Barry and Corby.
Do you know anyone who has been asked to do this ?
Will learn all I need to know from the FAQ's you put on Corby.
I remember doing this aaaages ago - rough guess, about 20 years ago.
I had to log every detail - when I turned the TV on and off, what channel was on, who was watching with me, details of anyone no longer watching or had left the room etc ...... all details of anyone watching were logged and I think this also included anyone not registered at our address.

Did you get paid for it Gizmonster
Don't know about 20 years ago but they don't get paid now.

//Panel members are not paid for participating on the BARB panel. Instead they are thanked for taking part with a choice of gift vouchers from a variety of outlets that appeals to all ages. They also receive a regular panel newsletter that includes competitions and opportunities to enter free prize draws.//

Ah well, at least they get something for helping with the figures.
I don't think I got paid cash, but I know I didn't do it for nothing.
I probably accumulated points which I could eventually redeem for vouchers or other rewards.
