Prince Harry and the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, reportedly turned down the title ‘Earl of Dumbarton’ for their son Archie over fears that he would be mocked for having the word ‘dumb’ in his name.
If true, these two are even dafter than I’d thought.
As if he’d ever be referred to as the ‘Earl of Dumbarton’ at school. “Sir, sir, the Earl of Dumbarton has stolen my pencil”.
Don’t think so.
I agree there has been a revival but it is more academic than natural. It is not used for everyday speech. As it died out in 1773 no one is sure how it was pronounced so those speakers tend to use Welsh as their guide. Manx is also experiencing something of a revival but as it only died out naturally in 1973 with the death of the last native speaker there are recordings of what it sounded like.
