Recently I noticed a few things missing. They include a pair of gloves, some screwdrivers, and chisels.
I don't want to confront her. Would it be best to say I can't afford to employ her anymore?

Agree with some answers, tell her you've misplaced these items and ask her to keep an eye out. That way she knows you've noticed them missing and she may 'find' them.

be absolutely certain she has taken them before you let her go, the job and money may mean a great deal to her, not to mention her reputation. They don't seem to be standard things that are stolen, I would ask her is she has seen any of the items.

sandy, I am sorry to read this. It must be upsetting for you to have considered that the lady may have taken the items and once that seed has been sown in your mind, even as a possibility, it probably will mean that you will have need to question her honesty in the future.

I have no doubt that you are a gentleman and would do anything to avoid a confrontation with her. I agree that it would be best to explain you have mislaid the items yourself and ask if she has seen them. I wish you well with the matter.
