Not the ones Tilly wears to weddings :) but the brand.
Does anyone have one? OH bought one yesterday, wore it to walk the dog and a gust of wind blew it off.
Looking on line, it appears if you do the chin strap in a particular way, the strap can be worn at the back, not under the chin, and still keep the hat from blowing off.
We’ve followed the instructions and it looks like we’ve done it correctly but I really can’t see how having the straps at the back, and not under the chin, will stop the hat being blown off.
Anyone?

really oddly, my husband and i went to an old fashioned gentlemen's outfitters on monday to get him a new suit, and he asked me if he could buy a tilley hat (of which they had a big display). At £70 i (of course) said no, but the salesperson was banging on about how to wear them but i'm afraid i switched off!

Bednobs, oh paid £63 for his, worth every penny (I hope) as he has solar keratosis and has struggled to find a hat big enough to fit his rather large head.
He really hates putting sunblock (of which he’s tried many) on his head, and has a collection of various types of hat, all of which are too tight.
Doh, I wish your other half had bought one ;)
I do have a Tilley hat, Vagus. I just tuck the strap up into the hat before I put it on. Unless it's exceptionally windy, it stays put, otherwise, I jam it further on my head and hold on to the front.

Haven't tried the strap at the back but think it would look daft and mess up my hair. :-)

From about 8:30.

The cord tightens the hat so it grips the head a wee bit more.
i didnt mean of course that £70 was too expensive for a hat (he has an akubra, so i am not averse to him spending money on hats in principle) However, when you are buying a new suit (not off the peg) plus new shirt and possibly a new belt, and your wife is buying herself a cuppa, it's rather rude to ask if the budget will stretch to a new hat too!

Corby, thank you, I’d not seen that clip, explains it perfectly! And it works!!
Tilly, the back strap doesn’t mess your hair up any worse than a hat does, and definitely keeps the hat very snug to the head. Other half’s hat is waaay too big for me but with the strap adjustment I reckon it’d stay on my head in quite a breeze.
I didn’t think you meant that Bednobs, I think we got a bargain at an outdoor shop as many things were reduced including, surprisingly, some Tilley hats. I’d have demanded lunch and a large glass of wine, never mind a cuppa!!
Just spent half an hour fiddling with my hat. I had to try quite a few times to get the back strap at just the right size. It works really well and the hat feels much more stable on my head.

I might just go outside again and try it out. Thanks for this post, Vagus.
The strap under the chin keeps it secure in all but the most stormy conditions.
I’d no idea what a Tilly hat was . I did see many of them worn at Lords Cricket Ground many years ago though .
I've obviously see many people wearing them but I had never known what they were called until today.

Other half is a fussy britches and doesn’t like using the chin strap unless in gale force winds. Just back from a very breezy dog walk and the hat stayed put very successfully with the back strap adjusted to fit his head.
Glad the post has helped you Tilly :)
The akubra hats which Bednobs mentions are worth a look too, they and Tilley’s are made for purpose and a lot of thought has gone into them.
Thanks again Corby, brill :o)
They guarantee that if your hat wears out they'll replace or repair it. You need to send £6 p+p with the hat.
I'd guess they'd do more repairing than replacing.
Do a couple of cartwheels Tills. Haha :))
Just done three, Togo. The hat stayed put. ;-)
hmm this thread (and your mention of keratosis) has made me re-consider his need for one
Are they washable?
Some are machine washable others are hand wash only, the instructions will say.
They look to me what I would have called a bush hat.
Mine is an Airflo and it can be machine washed on a delicate cycle.
we went to pick up the suit today and guess what? he bought one
It was bound to happen :-)
