A new tv series about bailiffs is starting tonight, that is the third different series about bailiffs to my knowledge.
What is the fascination with bailiffs? I watched a few episodes of Can't Pay and was delighted to read that C5 was successfully sued by a couple for invasion of privacy.

Not my idea of entertainment

I agree, eve. In one episode there was an elderly gentleman in great distress, it was disturbing to see. I can't imagine how he or his family felt when the show was aired
I've seen a few of these types of programme and my sympathies tend to lie with those who are being cheated out of what they're owed by unscrupulous people who can change a letter of their company name and get out of paying.

at last a comment that i agree with. its the hard working companies that fold up due to some people ignoring their bills I feel sorry for

Zebo, totally agree that people should be repaid owed money. I have no problems with bailiffs doing their jobs.
It is the televising of it for entertainment that I object to.
Think some posters on this thread would change their minds if they were owed thousands of £s in rent with tenants refusing to move out, and when the Bailiffs evict them, they have trashed the landlords house in spite. Believe me it ain't funny.
barry - The appeal of the show is the same as all reality television - a combination of cheap production costs and large viewing audiences.

I'd have to agree with those who confirm that the premise of these shows is unpleasant, seeing people either provoked into bad behaviour, or emotional melt-down by unexpected circumatnces does not make for an enjoyable viewing experience for a lot of people.

That said, it clearly does for a large enough audience for companies to continue to churn such programmes out.

gulliver, I don't think anyone on this thread has indicated that they think the use of bailiffs is bad or that debts should not be recovered. From what I have seen on this programme the bailiffs are professional and often very kind and helpful - whether that's because the tv cameras are filming I don't know.

I've had to take people to the high court in the past and would certainly have used bailiffs had they not paid up.

I would agree - it's clear that your OP is no questioning the need, or the methods of bailiffs, rather whether or not their actions and the reactions to them, are an appropriate subject for an entertainment programme or series.
