It's coming up for six months now, I am purchasing a property, the money is available and the property is vacant possession, no chain. All I get is one excuse after another, is there anything I can say/do to get them to act more quickly? Would threatening with the Solicitors Ombudsman be an option? Anybody in a similar position? Thanks.

What is the latest excuse? Is it the solicitor or the seller that is delaying the completion?
Depends what the hold ups are. How much longer can you wait. Give a deadline of maybes 2 months and ask if they can guarantee to meet it??
We are having problems with buyers lender solicitor asking questions that have already been answered and not replying to buyer or our solicitor in a timely fashion. Because of this tax deadline was missed
Can't you demand an explanation to the delay? If they don't do so, explain you will go elsewhere.

The latest excuse is always very similar, we are reviewing replies from sellers solicitor, the sellers solicitor is not the problem.
Ditch the solicitor, get a better one
I doubt the S O will help - the Judiciary are famed for closing ranks under criticism.

The best method (which I successfully used) is to stay in their office until you witness some action.
See if you have a valid complaint that the Legal Ombudsman can deal with https://www.legalombudsman.org.uk/how-we-work/consumer-journey/
Yes I am
the days are gone when the average was 6 weeks
today the average time ( not the 50% point, that is the median) is 26 weeks
and there is all sort of la-la they will invoke
such as - you are not you ( passport reqd AT the lawyers office)(*)
you dont live where you say you do even tho you seem to asnwer their letter ( list 2 bill needed)

you STILL may be a money laundered (**)

and the hours mount up !

(*) hahaha with covid, personally presenting anything is fun
(**) this one runs and runs. Big fines without a court case

so you and I are screwed I am agraid

I am just about to exchange contracts on a house the buyer showed and interest in - - Sep 2020
try ringing every day
they will do it just get on with it to get you off their backs
I would go to their office & "play pop" as my mum would say.
