Scroll down to 15:19:

"The Scottish government is seeking to make many of its emergency coronavirus powers permanent, including the ability to close schools, introduce lockdowns and operate virtual courts."

These powers are Draconian and should only be used in the most serious circumstances. But it seems, if Scotland's idea is accepted, they can be used on ministerial whim.

Sacre Bleu!
sorry:
Naomh Gorm
well it's good prep for when they join the EUSSR.....
This coupled with the socialist idea of a minimum standard of living is all very odd.
You don't know the half of it in our emerging Stalinist utopia.

Imagine your local council getting their hands on the national levers of power.
That's where we are at the minute. We must rely on effective opposition to bring this nonsense to a halt.

Some say "Aye, that's going to appear any time now".
Looks like the wee un is getting ready for a Stalinist takeover - and I am not joking.

Get rid of them, permanently, while you still can.
The first, maybe. Bet they won't be the last. Governments, of all stripes, don't like to give up extra/emergency powers. (voluntarily)
You're a strange bloke, tora.
We haven't had a new Government edict, clampdown on civil liberties, that you haven't cheered to the rafters.
Is it OK when a, so called, Tory Government do it?
spice: "We haven't had a new Government edict, clampdown on civil liberties, that you haven't cheered to the rafters. " - I've supported limitations on people who are not vaccinated, seems a bit far fetched to accuse me generally of supporting state intervention which I do not.

'24. Underpinning these powers would be significant safeguards including a requirement that Ministers must have regard to the advice of the CMO before giving a direction, that Ministers be satisfied that giving a direction is necessary and proportionate, and that any directions should apply for a defined period and be subject to regular review.' --- https://www.gov.scot/publications/covid-recovery-consultation-public-services-justice-system-reforms/pages/6/

Plausible, or insidious ?

This 'novel' virus, which with its variants is likely be with us forever, has and will continue to bring about enormous social upheaval.
I wonder if the Virgin will also go for an Enabling Act,like the German nationalists did back in 1933?Wouldnt surprise me.
You are right NJ, we must scrutinize carefully all proposals from 'Authorities' re our future and how they shape it.

I agree with just how dangerous this - and this coming from someone who doesn't appear to be squeaky-clean as to SNP funding and project investment at the moment.....She's overstepping 'the Principles of Liberty' and this, I hope, will be fought from within and out of Scotland.
This was always the worry - and is the reason I try, with limited financial means, to support an organisation fighting to get the true stories out.
