Translating Thyroid Function Test
4 Answers
Firstly, I know you’re probably not all doctors, but I’m hoping to find an answer here so as not to waste NHS time.
I have hypothyroidism. Dosage of 125 levothyroxine daily.
GP has text me my test results of a routine thyroid function test, but I don’t really understand it.
Test:
Plasma TSH level (range 0.3 - 4.2mU/L) = 4.64
Plasma free T4 level (range 9.00 - 19.00 pmol/L) = 14.2
Normally the GP phones me when they want to up my medication, but they haven’t.
I can see one result is within range and one out, so what does that mean for my treatment?
Should I expect a call later this week to increase my medication?
Thank you in advance!

meanwhile:
Most patients who have a mildly elevated TSH have a normal free thyroxine (T4) level. The treatment of such patients is controversial, particularly when they have few or no symptoms and no other clinical evidence of thyroid disease.
