There is some doubt that Lee Harvey Oswald did it on his own, but even if he did, there are some strange goings on in the period leading up to it.
He works in a top secret base for the US army, THEN later emigrates to Russia (giving up his passprot), a VERY strange thing to do at any time, then marries the daughter of a Russian general, then comes back to the USA (and they let him in).
This is very wierd behaviour.

To understand why so many people COULD have been involved in killing him you need to know a lot about what was going on at that time.
To much to cover here but you had:
The take over of Cuba by Castro, with support from Russia, and the failure of Kennedy to back an invasion to get it back (hence upsetting Cuban supporters).
This was during the cold war when the USA and Russia were fighting the arms race.
The attempt by both Kennedy brothers to come down hard on organized crime (hence upsetting the Mafia and other gang leaders).
The failure by President Kennedy to send more soldiers to the far east (Korea, Vietnam etc), labeling him soft and a commie lover.
Also remember he was visting the south (Texas) a very right wing state when he was shot, and both Kennedy's were seen as soft liberals, or even commies, by people from Texas.
The vice president was from Texas (Johnson) so if Kennedy went a strong Southern man would become president, which appealed to many who wanted a stronger president.
And note that after Kennedy was assasinated President Johnson immediately ecalated the war in the far east, leading eventually to the Vietnam war.
I think people were queueing up to kill Kennedy at that time, hence the number of different theories.

It was Lee Harvey Oswald acting on his own, but due to this being a massive embarrassment to the American presidency, they started the rumours of a conspiracy so as too 'cover their backs'. Just picture it, the most powerfull nation in the world, the numero uno and their leader slain by a loner! oh dear!!!!!
