Private Plate help - again!

I've got all my docs through and am going to the DVLA Office (and informing my insurance Company) on Thursday - do I have to put the new plates on immediately day or can it wait a few days ? (Til I get hold of a drill !) I wondered if it would affect my insurance in the event of a claim if they weren't displayed. Sorry if it sounds a dopey question :)

Dont tell your insurance company until the day you fit the new plates & ( tax disc).
But to be sure ask at the DVLA office about time allowed,
on the V843 certificate - on NOTES, number 9 -
this certificate is valid for 6 weeks!

if the dvla do the transfer there and then,you must put the plates on more or less straight away and inform your insurance,but they will explain it all to you on thursday.

when you go to the dvla you will need to take an insurance cert WITH PRIVATE NUMBER on it , log book and MOT ( if it has one ). this is only if your plate is on retention. my hubby sells cars and has to do this alot !!

quick easy bodge so you can have the right plates on when you pull out of dvla car park and be completely on the right side of the law, bring the new plates and some clear tape, put the new one up against the old one and tape a few times around them both on either side.

The problem you may have is getting the plates made, you will need all the right docs. before anyone will prepare them for you, unless you get them from the web who ask for nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've already had the plates made. I went to my local shop who were happy to make them once I produced some ID and the certificate to show that the plate belongs to me.

Do not do anything at all until you receive notification from the DVLA telling you can now swop the plates.

You do not need to do it the second you get the go ahead the DVLA keep both numbers for your car on file.

Have done both! Stood outside DVLA office & attached pre-drilled plate to bike, but with car got plates made (wiv relevant paperwork in hand!), went to DVLA office & sorted V5 ("log-book") & was given new tax disc. Went home, still displaying 'old' number, changed plates later & sent old tax disc back. (In envelope very kindly provided for purpose!) Then informed insurance co. of change. In reality, both DVLA & insurance co. live in the real world & as long as you're being honest & always display correct plates TOGETHER with correct tax they don't really care.
Also, DVLA NEVER looked at insurance certificate, but they did re-issue MOT cert with 'new' number.
