I need to have a set of headphones connected to my Tv without the normal sound speakers being muted Any Ideas

Have you tried it? My tv doesn't mute the speakers when headphones are connected, you may have to fiddle with the settings.

If you have a box such as a Roku or Xbox, or a soundbar, connected to your tv you could connect the headphones to that.

my older* LG TV wouldnt do it
my new one has an option in the sound settings for sound out = optical device plus speakers or bluetooth plus speakers (depending on your headphones)

*older means about 6 years old, so not at all ancient

Modern TVs often have a setting hidden in their menus that allows people to be able to use headphones without the speakers being muted.

Older TVs use a more basic system, whereby inserting the headphone jack moves a little prong inside the socket, which breaks the circuit to the speakers. (With such a system, it's impossible to have both speakers and headphones in use at the same time with either getting inside the set or using external amplified speakers, as well as headphones, fed from the headphone socket).

So, in order to provide an accurate answer, we need to know the make and model of your set. (NB: We'll need the exact model number, from the back of the set. A general response, such as 'Sony Bravia' won't be sufficient).

hi chris i know i asked the same question with my old tv and it wouldnt do it, plugging into the virgin box left me with an annoying delay. On my new TV lg55up78 is the way i described above the way to do it? I ask cause i cant currently try it out as i cant quite get to the out socket ! my headphones are the sony ones you have
