My neighbour has been using un-successfuly, until now, a 'humane' squirrel trap. What's the point of these? And what would he do with the caught squirrel besides giving it a good telling off for eating his strawberries.
The point of a squirrel trap is to catch the squirrel of course, it can then be released (though illegally) miles from where it was caught or it can be killed.
Squirrels can do a lot of damage if they get into your house and believe me they do get in. They are also know to mess up lawns pinch all the fruit and nuts from trees and cause damage to young trees.
Lonnie, get yourself a humane squirrel trap, bait it with fruit, catch your squirrel, whilst the trap is set cover the trap in plastic or some other waterproof covering to keep the rain off and to stop dogs cats etc from worrying it to death, then either shoot it or release it (please don't drown it) miles away near some woods, but don't tell anybody I told you to .
;-)
Thanks for the advice Ratter, I would never drown them, it would have to be a quick death, I don't have a gun, apart from the particular bit you never said, any other advice would be gratefully recieved.
Lonnie, sorry but not much else you can do really, there are few different instant kill traps on the market but you really need to be trained in their use as if not set correctly they will kill or severely injure other animals, including cats and dogs and will shatter the bones in fingers. There is also a poison that can be used but only in certain circumstances and not usually on a domestic scale.
It might sound a bit mad but most animals hate the smell of lemon juice,if your neighbour can't bear them try getting him to pour jif lemon juice every other day around wherever he wants to stop them.It will make any pets sneeze if they go there but won't harm them. Whatever is wrong with this man anyway, killing animals over some strawberries??!!! Hope he's a bit more tolerant as a neighbour!!
If it is a grey squirrel that he's after then he's can't legally release it into the wild as it is a non-native animal. If it's a red squirrel then it's probably illegal to trap them.
