Didn't Labour's membership balloon when they were trying to get Corbyn elected? Perhaps they are all deciding it was a failed enterprise.

// My understanding is we have lost at least 100,000 members so far. //

Voters lost patience with Labour and the party suffered a huge defeat at the last election. Now it appears that the members have realised they are wasting their time and leaving in droves. Starmer has no future, but I am not sure the party does either. New Labour was a bit of a sham and they should not do that again. But it feels like the organisation needs dismantling and rebuilding from the ground up. There is a lot of baggage to discard.
New Labour was an electable project.
The point of a serious political party is to be in power to change things or it is a complete waste of time. Say what you like about Blair, his governments got things done.
What caused a problem for the future by Blair’s own admission was taking too much power from the members, understandable tho that was. Hence the pro-Corbyn backlash.

Whether Labour’s leader is Starmer or anyone else, without power it is pointless.
Labour’s chief problem is probably the way it is itself governed: the NEC needs to be reformed.
The other issue it has as I’ve said before is that currently the Tories under Johnson have stolen a few of its clothes, at least in the talking stakes. Unless and until that’s exposed as a sham then it will be difficult for Labour.

"Didn't Labour's membership balloon when they were trying to get Corbyn elected? " - yep, hundreds of thousands of Tories joined cheap and voted for Agent Cob, PMSL!
Question Author
douglas: "How very underhand but so like them." - like any game, you optimise your performance within the rules. If they were stupid enough to offer voting membership for a couple of quid then more fool them.

grumpy: "Boris will eventually shoot himself in the foot given his broken manifesto promises. " - Boris could roger the duke of York with a prize winning leek on prime time TV and Labour still wouldn't win.
“ yep, hundreds of thousands of Tories joined cheap and voted for Agent Cob, PMSL!”

Some did, but I think that’s been overplayed.
It certainly wasn’t hundreds of thousands lol
Can well remember a well know Tory Idiot that posts regular on A/b to this day joining the Labour Party to elect Corbyn... sneaky git..
Grumpy//given his broken manifesto promises.//
As circumstances change (covid etc) then Boris must also change his policies.
Boris couldn't even change his mind without help.
