Hi my Hyunai i40 is due its first ever MOT next month , do I have to have this done at a Hyundai garage as they have rung 3 times asking me to book it in.
Well . . . they would say that - wouldn't they? An opportunity for them to earn any additional money for service, repairs etc. Read this, it might help you to choose:-
If your car is still under warranty it might be advisable to have the MOT done at a Hyundai garage. If out of warranty, just go to a garage of your choice. I still get reminders from Fiat dealers, but haven't used them for the past couple of years.
I agree with Sunny Dave - if an independent garage finds a fault you can still take it to the dealer for warranty repair. If your warranty is mileage as well as age dependent, make sure you have an MoT just before the mileage limit, if it occurs before the 5 years - OK, you will lose time on your Mot but you might need something done that can be done under warranty.
Son took his i30 to dealer for first mot, not only did it fail on brake pads but also on discs, he was gobsmacked cost was over£300. Cant really trust the dealer im afraid.
geoff - where had your son's car been serviced; it should have been pointed out that the brake pads were getting worn. Pads and discs have a fixed limit on them; either your son's were out of tolerance or they weren't. He should have been shown the old pads.
I've never taken any car that I have owned (all from new) to the supplying franchised dealer for MOT....why would you?
I always go to formula1 autocentres....they are trustworthy and charge half-price (or less) for MOTs....and I've never been "failed" by them, either.
You can have it done at any place you choose.
As an example, we use only original specification or genuine quality parts so vehicles are kept within their manufacturer warranty. https://www.dackmotorgroup.co.uk/
