Probably Victor Sylvester, who was the only ballroom dancing instructor who was famous, a household name here, in the 50s and 60s. He had his own 'strict tempo' orchestra, with its own distinctive sound, which made many records which became standard material for dance schools .He presented shows on radio and TV, the Len Goodman of his day. He did have a dance school which, naturally, charged a lot for his personal tuition. He is credited with 'slow, slow, quick quick, slow' as a catchprase (!) . (It's the tempo for steps in the slow foxtrot)
Arthur Murray was an American equivalent, who had franchised dance schools.

Maurice Jay's in Green wood. My friend Barry was one of his Formation Dancers'. As well he was in a movie with Marilyn Monroe called the princess and the pauper. He was one of the dancers on the movie. He also was a dancer on the chubby checker show in England back in the 60's with his beautiful wife. I don't know Barry's last name as I only know him as Barry. I never got the pleasure of meeting his wife as she passed away last Christmas 2020. She also was a dancer with Maurice Jays formation dancers. I have tried to Google Maurice Jays formation dancers and also looked on YouTube but can't find anything. If anyone has any pictures of the Maurice Jays formation dancers or anything else to do with Maurice Jays school of dancing please send me the at [email protected]. Barry would be so chuffed if I turn up with some photos. I to was a ballroom dancer back in the 70's. Thanks again from Shiralee Bierton-Elliot
