I was let go later. When the unit reopened it would seem my items have disappeared. Am I entitled to recompense for my items. About £150 worth.

Have you spoken to the company and said you want to take action if you do they might compensate you without the effort of doing it officially

What is the company policy? Were you supposed to have personal items there? When did you first contact them about it?
how do you stand about getting your stuff?
well, you can't!, it's been chucked away

I worked in a respite unit for adults and children with disabilities. I often took my personal craft equipment and supplies to use with the service users and was never told not to do it. I wanted to check if I had any rights before approaching management who I know will try to cover their own backs.
you never know, bednobs, they might have locked it up somewhere. Whatever, step 1 is to ask them what they've done with it.
at a guess, they've prevented you from accessing your property then thrown it away. Sounds like theft to me, unless there's some corner of employment law saying otherwise.
Were your items in your personal area such as a locker?
Were they marked as your property in any way?
Was the company aware they belonged to you or reasonably should have known?
Can you claim on your home insurance?

I asked manager for a locker to be told lockers were for permanent staff
It is important to know if the goods could be readily identified as your property and not the company's.

It was not anything the company would purchase. Not many non crafters would know how to use it so clearly did not belong to the company. No attempt was made through staff to find out who owned these items.
